Unit 3-4 at Alberta Hospital is a 19-bed Subacute Adult Forensic unit dedicated to providing comprehensive mental health treatment and support to individuals with complex mental health and addiction challenges who are under legal disposition. Reporting to the Unit Manager, the Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) / Registered Nurse (RN) plays a key role in delivering high-quality patient care. Responsibilities include assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care in alignment with clinical policies and nursing standards. The successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a multidisciplinary team, efficient documentation and charting skills, proven ability to make clinical decisions using critical thinking skills, and ability to advocate for excellent, trauma-informed patient care, while maintaining professional boundaries. Description:
As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $39.58 - $54.16 per hour. Upon obtaining a full licence, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification. If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, you must complete the following free courses: CRNA Medication Management (Chapters 1-4), available at https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/learning-and-development/learning-modules/ and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification, available at https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271.
Additional Required Qualifications:Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA). Recent clinical experience in Acute Adult In-patient Psychiatric Mental Health, or Forensic Psychiatry, or Correctional setting. Consideration will be taken for individuals who have completed a preceptorship program through an accredited nursing program on a Forensic Unit/Correctional setting. Working knowledge of relevant legislation is required, including the Alberta Mental Health Act and POPA/ATIA. Working knowledge of psychotropic medications and psychopathology. Working knowledge and understanding of the principles of trauma-informed care. Working knowledge of the DSM-V. Working knowledge of non-violent crisis de-escalation strategies/techniques to assist with complex behavioral needs. Certification in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or ability to obtain same within 3 months of hire is required. Working knowledge of the CoAct model of care.
Preferred Qualifications:Recent or continuous Psychiatric ICU, Forensic or Correctional experience is preferred. Sound knowledge of the Alberta Review Board Processes is a great addition. Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification preferred. Critical Thinking Abilities and the ability to Lead. Preference will be given to candidates who are skilled in engagement, de-escalation, and maintaining healthy boundaries, while providing excellent care in a collaborative team environment.
